The GYROTONIC® Method
A structured movement system built on coordinated strength, mobility, and breath.
What It Is
The GYROTONIC EXPANSION SYSTEM® uses continuous, three-dimensional movement sequences performed on specialized equipment. The work combines strength, mobility, coordination, and breath in a single, integrated format.
Movements travel through multiple planes, which helps develop balanced muscle engagement and more efficient mechanics. Sessions are guided and adapted in real time based on how your body responds.
Common outcomes include improved posture, reduced recurring tension, increased joint range of motion, and more controlled, coordinated movement.
How It Works
How Sessions Are Structured
Sessions are built around progressive sequences that link movement and breath. The focus is on:
• Spinal movement in all directions
• Coordinated strength through the full body
• Controlled, continuous transitions between exercises
• Breath patterns that support stability and mobility
The approach is precise and progressive, with each session building on the previous one.
Equipment
The Gyrotonic Method is practiced on purpose-built equipment designed to support fluid movement and full-body coordination. Each piece can be adjusted to suit different body types and movement needs.
The Pulley Tower Combination Unit
The primary piece of equipment used in most sessions. It allows for guided, circular movement patterns that develop strength, mobility, and coordination.
The Jumping Stretching Board
Introduces sliding and dynamic movement patterns, along with additional options for lower-body coordination and control.
The GYROTONER®
Focuses on shoulder and hip articulation, supporting increased range of motion and joint control.
The Leg Extension Unit
Develops coordination between upper and lower body while strengthening the back line and improving lower limb function.
The ARCHWAY®
Provides a suspended environment for advanced strength and coordination work, particularly through the upper body and spine.
What Clients Work Toward
Clients use Gyrotonic sessions to support:
• Improved posture and spinal support
• Reduced chronic tension
• Recovery following injury or physiotherapy
• Increased flexibility and joint mobility
• Greater strength and endurance
• More efficient movement in daily life or sport
Progress is gradual and measurable, with changes building over time.
GYROKINESIS®
Gyrokinesis is the same movement system practiced without equipment, using a stool and mat. It follows similar principles of rhythm, breath, and continuous movement.
It offers a more accessible format while still supporting mobility, coordination, and full-body integration.
Origins of the Method
The Gyrotonic Expansion System was developed by Juliu Horvath and first taught to dancers in the 1980s. It has since expanded into a widely used movement system for a range of individuals, from athletes to those focused on long-term physical health.
